Remark

Sensitive& specific marker of pancreatic injury

The Lipase Test measures the level of lipase enzyme in the blood. Lipase is primarily produced by the pancreas and plays a key role in breaking down fats during digestion. This test is commonly used to diagnose and monitor pancreatic disorders, especially acute pancreatitis.

Why is the Lipase Test Important?

  • High lipase levels may indicate acute or chronic pancreatitis, gallstones, pancreatic cancer, kidney disease, or bowel obstruction.
  • Low lipase levels may be seen in chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, or pancreatic insufficiency, where the pancreas doesn’t produce enough digestive enzymes.

This test is often recommended when a patient has severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or symptoms of pancreatitis. It is usually performed alongside an amylase test for a more comprehensive evaluation of pancreatic function.
