The Calcium (Ca) Test measures the level of calcium in the blood, an essential mineral for bone health, muscle function, nerve signaling, and heart function. Calcium also plays a key role in blood clotting and enzyme activity.

Why is the Calcium Test Important?

  • High calcium levels (Hypercalcemia) may indicate hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D toxicity, kidney disease, bone disorders, or certain cancers.
  • Low calcium levels (Hypocalcemia) may result from vitamin D deficiency, parathyroid disorders, kidney disease, or malnutrition.
  • Imbalanced calcium levels can lead to muscle cramps, numbness, bone weakness, fatigue, or abnormal heart rhythms.

When is the Test Recommended?

  • If a person has bone pain, muscle weakness, numbness, irregular heartbeat, or kidney disease.
  • People with osteoporosis, thyroid or parathyroid disorders, or chronic kidney disease may need regular monitoring.
  • Often included in bone health panels, electrolyte tests, and kidney function tests (KFT/RFT).
