Procalcitonin (PCT) Test

The Procalcitonin (PCT) test measures the level of procalcitonin, a protein produced in response to bacterial infections and sepsis. It is primarily used to detect and monitor severe bacterial infections, sepsis, and systemic inflammation. This test helps doctors differentiate between bacterial and viral infections, as PCT levels tend to rise significantly in bacterial infections but remain low in viral infections or mild inflammatory conditions.

High PCT levels indicate a severe bacterial infection, such as sepsis, pneumonia, kidney infections, or post-surgical infections, requiring urgent medical attention. Moderate elevations may be seen in localized bacterial infections or inflammatory conditions, while low PCT levels suggest a low likelihood of bacterial infection, helping reduce unnecessary antibiotic use. This test is often recommended for patients with fever, rapid heart rate, difficulty breathing, or symptoms of systemic infection.
