The Amylase Test measures the level of amylase enzyme in the blood or urine. Amylase is produced mainly by the pancreas and salivary glands and plays a crucial role in digesting carbohydrates. This test is primarily used to diagnose and monitor pancreatic disorders.

Why is the Amylase Test Important?

  • High amylase levels may indicate acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, gallstones, pancreatic cancer, or salivary gland infections (like mumps).
  • Low amylase levels may be seen in chronic pancreatitis, liver disease, cystic fibrosis, or pancreatic insufficiency.

This test is commonly ordered when a patient experiences severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or symptoms of pancreatitis. It is often performed alongside a lipase test for a more accurate assessment of pancreatic function.
