The Kidney Function Test (KFT) / Renal Function Test (RFT) is a blood test used to assess how well the kidneys are functioning. It helps diagnose and monitor kidney diseases, dehydration, diabetes-related kidney damage, and high blood pressure-related kidney issues.

Key Parameters in KFT/RFT:

  • Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN): Measures urea levels in the blood; high levels indicate poor kidney function or dehydration.
  • Serum Creatinine: A waste product from muscle metabolism; elevated levels suggest kidney dysfunction.
  • Uric Acid: High levels may indicate kidney disease or gout.
  • Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium, Chloride): Essential for fluid balance and kidney health; imbalances can indicate kidney issues.
  • Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR): Estimates how well the kidneys filter waste; a lower GFR indicates reduced kidney function.

Abnormal kidney function test results may indicate chronic kidney disease (CKD), kidney infections, kidney stones, or acute kidney injury. This test is recommended for individuals with diabetes, hypertension, urinary problems, or a family history of kidney disease.
