Platelet Count

Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are small blood cells essential for blood clotting and wound healing. A platelet count test measures the number of these cells in the blood to help diagnose various medical conditions. The normal platelet count ranges between 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood. A low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) can lead to excessive bleeding, easy bruising, and slow clotting. It may be caused by viral infections such as dengue or HIV, autoimmune disorders like lupus, bone marrow disorders, or certain medications, including chemotherapy and blood thinners. On the other hand, a high platelet count (thrombocytosis) can increase the risk of blood clots, potentially leading to severe conditions like stroke or heart attack. Causes of thrombocytosis include chronic inflammation (such as rheumatoid arthritis), iron deficiency anemia, cancer, or post-surgery recovery.
