Bilirubin (Total, Direct, Indirect) test

The Bilirubin (Total, Direct, Indirect) test measures the levels of bilirubin in the blood to assess liver function, jaundice, and hemolytic disorders. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced during the breakdown of red blood cells and is processed by the liver for elimination.

Key Components of the Bilirubin Test:

• Total Bilirubin: The combined amount of direct and indirect bilirubin in the blood.
• Direct (Conjugated) Bilirubin: The form of bilirubin processed by the liver and ready for excretion. High levels may indicate liver disease or bile duct obstruction.
• Indirect (Unconjugated) Bilirubin: The form of bilirubin before liver processing. Elevated levels may suggest increased red blood cell breakdown (hemolysis).

High bilirubin levels can be seen in liver diseases (hepatitis, cirrhosis), gallbladder disorders, hemolytic anemia, and newborn jaundice. Symptoms include yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), dark urine, pale stools, and fatigue.
