Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH)

The Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) Test measures the level of LDH enzyme in the blood. LDH is found in almost all body tissues, including the heart, liver, kidneys, muscles, lungs, and red blood cells. It plays a key role in energy production. When cells are damaged or destroyed, LDH is released into the bloodstream, making it a useful marker for tissue damage and disease monitoring.

Why is the LDH Test Important?

• Elevated LDH levels may indicate heart attack, liver disease, anemia, infections, lung disease, muscle injury, or certain cancers.
• Low LDH levels are rare and generally not of clinical concern.
• LDH is non-specific, meaning further tests may be needed to pinpoint the exact cause of high levels.

This test is often used to monitor disease progression in conditions like hemolytic anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, and muscle disorders. It may also help assess the severity of COVID-19 or other infections.
