Plasma Ammonia Test

The Plasma Ammonia Test measures the level of ammonia in the blood. Ammonia is a waste product formed when the body breaks down protein. The liver normally converts ammonia into urea, which is then excreted through the kidneys. High ammonia levels indicate potential liver dysfunction or metabolic disorders.

Why is the Plasma Ammonia Test Important?

• High ammonia levels (Hyperammonemia) may indicate liver disease (such as cirrhosis, hepatitis), urea cycle disorders, kidney failure, or metabolic conditions.
• Elevated ammonia can cause confusion, tremors, lethargy, and in severe cases, coma (hepatic encephalopathy).
• This test is crucial for diagnosing hepatic encephalopathy, Reye’s syndrome, and inherited metabolic disorders.

When is the Test Recommended?

• If a person has symptoms of confusion, altered mental state, extreme fatigue, or unexplained vomiting.
• Patients with liver disease, suspected metabolic disorders, or newborns with developmental issues may need testing.
• Often performed alongside liver function tests (LFT), kidney function tests (KFT), and blood gas analysis.
