Pleural Fluid C/S

Pleural Fluid Culture and Sensitivity (C/S) is a laboratory test used to identify bacterial, fungal, or other microbial infections in the pleural fluid—the fluid surrounding the lungs. This test helps diagnose pleural infections, such as pneumonia-related pleuritis, tuberculosis, or empyema, and determines the most effective antibiotics for treatment.

This test is recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms such as persistent fever, chest pain, difficulty breathing, cough, or fluid accumulation in the lungs. It is particularly useful for detecting infections caused by bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, or Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Early diagnosis helps in selecting the appropriate antibiotic therapy and preventing complications.

A sample of pleural fluid is collected through a procedure called thoracentesis, where a needle is inserted into the pleural space to withdraw fluid. The sample is then cultured to detect microbial growth and tested for sensitivity to antibiotics.

This test is suitable for all age groups, especially for patients with suspected pleural infections or unexplained fluid buildup in the lungs. Since pleural infections can lead to severe complications if left untreated, consulting a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment is essential.
