Anti-Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody (Anti-TPO)
Anti-Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody (Anti-TPO) is an autoantibody that targets thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme essential for thyroid hormone production. The presence of these antibodies in the blood is commonly associated with autoimmune thyroid disorders, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease. The Anti-TPO test helps diagnose thyroid dysfunction and monitor disease progression.
This test is particularly useful for individuals experiencing symptoms like fatigue, weight changes, hair loss, and swelling in the neck. It is often prescribed alongside other thyroid function tests, including TSH, T3, and T4. While the presence of Anti-TPO antibodies confirms autoimmune thyroid disease, it does not necessarily indicate the severity of the condition. In some cases, individuals may have high antibody levels but normal thyroid function.
Women, especially during pregnancy, are at higher risk of developing thyroid autoimmunity, which can lead to complications such as hypothyroidism or miscarriage. Early detection through the Anti-TPO test allows for timely intervention and management.
No special preparation is needed for this test, and it is conducted using a simple blood sample. If the results indicate elevated Anti-TPO levels, further evaluation and treatment by an endocrinologist may be required.
