Scrub Typhus

Scrub Typhus is a bacterial infection caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, transmitted through the bite of infected chigger mites. The disease is prevalent in rural and forested areas of Asia-Pacific regions. Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes. A characteristic black scab (eschar) often appears at the bite site. If untreated, it can lead to severe complications like organ failure, pneumonia, and meningitis. Diagnosis is confirmed through blood tests like IgM ELISA, PCR, or Weil-Felix test. Treatment typically involves antibiotics such as doxycycline or azithromycin. Early diagnosis and treatment significantly improve recovery. Preventive measures include avoiding mite-infested areas, wearing protective clothing, and using insect repellents.
