D-Dimer Test

The D-Dimer test is a blood test that measures the presence of D-dimer, a protein fragment produced when blood clots dissolve in the body. This test is primarily used to help diagnose or rule out serious blood clotting disorders, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). It is also used to assess clotting complications in conditions like COVID-19, stroke, or certain cardiovascular diseases.

A high D-dimer level indicates increased clot formation and breakdown in the body, which may be seen in clotting disorders, infections, recent surgery, trauma, or pregnancy. However, elevated levels do not always confirm a clot, so further imaging tests may be required for an accurate diagnosis. A normal or low D-dimer level helps rule out the presence of serious clotting disorders in most cases.
