Direct Coombs Test

The Direct Coombs Test (DCT), also known as the Direct Antiglobulin Test (DAT), is a blood test used to detect antibodies attached to the surface of red blood cells. This test helps diagnose conditions such as autoimmune hemolytic anemia, hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN), and transfusion reactions. It is performed by taking a blood sample and mixing it with Coombs reagent to observe if agglutination (clumping) occurs, indicating the presence of antibodies.

A positive result suggests immune-mediated red blood cell destruction, requiring further evaluation for underlying conditions.
